RAD Data Communications, a manufacturer of access equipment for data communications and telecomms applications, announced on 9 September that it has completed interoperability testing with Symmetricom for synchronising Next Generation Networks (NGNs).

Precise synchronisation between UMTS Base Transceiver Stations and the Radio Network Controller is essential to Ethernet and IP packet-switched networks. Symmetricom has developed a portfolio of timing solutions called 'Grand Master Clock' which support the IEEE 1588V2 standard to ensure synchronization over the NGN.

RAD's ACE-3220 cell gateway site can lock on to the Grand Master Clock to synchronise the system. The cell gateway is expected to be released shortly.
