RACING: Irish to land rare win; Vinnie Roe can turn up trumps.

VINNIE ROE can prove that he is a stayer of the highest class by giving Ireland only their fourth Gold Cup triumph in more than 50 years at Royal Ascot tomorrow.

Irish victories in the long-distance championship are to be cherished with Gladness (1958), Levmoss (1969) and Enzeli (1999) taking the Group One prize back to the Emerald Isle in living memory.

Vinnie Roe cannot only join that elite in tomorrow's Group One showpiece but he can show that he is ready to dominate the staying division for a long time to come.

Royal Rebel and Persian Punch, who fought out an epic finish 12 months ago are once again in opposition but bigger dangers are Godolphin's runner Wareed and the John Dunlop-trained Give Notice.

The Bonus King displayed tremendous speed and then great courage to hold off Monsieur Boulanger by half a length in the Vodafone Woodcote Stakes over six furlongs at Epsom on Derby day.

Although he drops back to the minimum trip for the Norfolk Stakes, the stiff course at Ascot should suit Mark Johnston's juvenile.

The Hampton Court Stakes can go to Sir Michael Stoute's Lishtar, who powered home by five lengths from Scent Of Victory at Newbury.

While Ghannam, from Marcus Tregoning's stable, can capture the Britannia Handicap following his tremendous effort behind Macaw from a poor draw at York last time.
