R.R. DONNELLEY FORGES PARTNERSHIP WITH DESKTOP DATA
CHICAGO, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company

(NYSE: DNY), the world's largest commercial printer, has formed a strategic partnership with Desktop Data, Inc., purchasing a 10 percent share of the Waltham, Mass.-based electronic information services and software company. Through this partnership, Desktop Data will distribute printed publications as well as news wires through its NewsEDGE software for personal computers, workstations and local-area networks (LANs).
NewsEDGE receives and accumulates a database of broadcast news from more than 100 wire services, including Dow Jones, Reuters and PR Newswire. The service provides news in real time with customized screen alerts according to customer interest profiles. The number of NewsEDGE customers has nearly tripled in the past year to some 8,000 users.
"NewsEDGE is an added-value service we can offer to customers who need immediate access to breaking stories on their clients and prospects,'' explained Jonathan P. Ward, president of R.R. Donnelley's Financial Printing Services Group. "This partnership opens another distribution channel for Donnelley's vast publishing customer base. Electronic information dissemination will continue to grow and complement our traditional print relationships with publishers of information."
"Large corporate, financial and government users of information want targeted magazine, newspaper and financial filing information delivered to their desktops as quickly as news wire stories," added Donald L. McLagan, Desktop Data founder and chief executive officer. "Partnering with R.R. Donnelley puts us in a better position to meet these customer needs."
R.R. Donnelley is the world's foremost provider of printing and related services, manufacturing catalogs, newspaper advertising inserts, magazines, books, directories, computer documentation and financial printing. The company employs more than 30,000 people and operates printing plants, service centers, sales offices and subsidiaries in more than 100 locations in North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.
