Q WHAT is the origin of the famous monkey-hanging legend in Hartlepool?

A Spencer, Middlesbrough

A DURING the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was sunk off the coast at Hartlepool and the only survivor was the ship's mascot - a monkey.

It was attired in a military jacket and hat. The people of Hartlepool assumed that it was a Frenchman, not having seen one before, and hung it.

F Kingdon, Burnhamon-Sea, Somerset

Can you answer this?

Q I WAS one of the last National Service call-ups in October 1959.
