Q WHAT does it mean when the Union Flag is raised upside down? WJ Smith Peterlee, Co Durham

A I BEG to differ with the previous answer which stated the Union Flag is not a maritime flag and thus has no meaning when hung upside down (Letters, August 9). The Union Flag is flown on the Jack Staff at the bow of all Royal Navy vessels when in port, which makes it a maritime flag. When it is raised upside down it is a signal of distress.
