Qualicoat looks at specification confusion.

There are two current National and European standards that cover the aspect of architectural powder coating, BS 6496:1984, which, despite it being superseded, is still referred to and BS EN 122061:2004 which is the current harmonised standard. The Qualicoat Standard, now in its 14th edition, encompasses BS EN 122061:2004, in fact this revised standard was compiled along the lines of the European Qualicoat standard at the time.

Whilst these National and European standards are frequently seen in specifications, it is encouraging to see the growth of the 'Qualicoat Standard' being referred to in growing number of specifications. What is unusual though, is the occasional specification of the AAMA standard, which has been seen from time to time by applicator members of Qualicoat. AAMA, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, is not currently recognised in the UK.

Qualicoat members within the supply chain, such as powder manufacturers, pretreatment systems suppliers and powder coaters are licenced when they can comply with the Qualicoat Standard, this can take several months to achieve and includes several unannounced quality inspections. To retain their licences members are quality inspected twice a year, again by unannounced quality audits, this ensures that the standard is being upheld and that quality is consistent. A failure in an inspection could result in a Qualicoat member losing their Qualicoat license. It is understood that the AAMA is not as well developed in this area. Furthermore, Qualicoat is very close to the aluminium supply chain and are represented on several national and international associations which represent our aluminium industry.

By specifying Qualicoat, you are ensuring that you are getting the benefits of the BS 6496:1984 and BS EN 12206-1:2004, plus the benefit of having the complete process independently inspected to maintain quality and consistency. Should you have a specific requirement, any member of the association can offer you support in the selection powder coat classes and pretreatment requirements.

The Qualicoat standard is now in its fourteenth edition and available through the UK association website, www.qualicoatuki.org, together with an up-to-date list of powder suppliers, pretreatment suppliers and applicators. Printed literature and telephone support is available from Qualicoat UK & Ireland's Head Office in Birmingham on 0121 601 6746. You can also follow the association on Twitter @Qualicoat.
