Qatar residents set to witness meteor shower.
Qatar Calendar House announced that residents of Qatar and countries in the northern part of the Earth will witness Lyrid Meteor Shower this Sunday (April 22) until the dawn of the next day. Astronomer at the Qatari Calendar House Dr Bashir Marzouk said that Lyrid Meteor Shower will be distinctive because the rate of fall at its peak is great, as it will fall from the sky at a peak of 10 to 20 meteors per hour, and the rate of flow can sometimes reach up to 80 meteors per hour, according to the assessment of meteorologists. He explained that residents of Qatar and the countries of the Arab region do not need devices or telescopes to monitor the Lyrid Meteor Shower, adding that they can witness the meteors by naked eye from Sunday evening until the dawn of the next day by looking at the north-eastern horizon. Modern digital cameras can also be used to obtain images of Lyrid Meteor Shower, taking into account the increased exposure time during filming. The astronomer pointed out that Comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher) is the source of the Lyrid Meteor Shower. The earth passes through the sun around the dust particles left by the comet during April of each year. Intersecting the particles with the earth's atmosphere, it causes a flash in the earth's atmosphere. The phenomenon of meteors generally occurs as a result of the passage of the earth near the fine debris and dust particles left behind by the comet particles. Lyrid Meteor Shower is active annually from April 16 to 25, but it reaches its peak between April 22 and 23 each year. The vision and monitoring of these meteors this year will have a good chance, because the moon will not be in the sky at the time of the arrival of the Lyrid Meteor Shower sharp. The moon will set from Doha skies on this day after midnight on Monday. The best places to watch the Lyrid Meteor Shower are the darkest places away from residential areas containing light and environmental pollutants that may hinder sight of meteors.
