Qatar committed to climate protection.

JOSEPH VARGHESE DOHA CHAIRMAN of the Organising Sub- Committee for the COP18 Fahad bin Mohammed al Attiyah has reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to protecting the environment.

Speaking at a press conference on the second day of COP 18 summit, Attiyah said the Qatar National Vision 2030 clearly places environment protection as a priority for the country.

He said Qatar is making serious efforts to transform itself from a carbon- based economy to a knowledgebased economy.

"Qatar National Vision 2030 is based on the four pillars of human development, environment development, economic development and social development. We have embarked on an ambitious programme of turning Qatar from a carbon- based economy to a knowledgebased community," he said.

He pointed out that Qatar, being a low-lying country, is extremely vulnerable to the impact of climate change.

He said 12,000 people, including 7,000 representatives of NGOs and observers, are already participating in the meet. The organising committee was making all efforts to address the challenges facing the smooth running of the event, particularly transportation of participants to and from the venue.

"Altogether 450 buses are plying from various centres with frequency of less than half an hour. We have also added another route called 'Green Route' to the Doha Exhibition Center where the Qatar Sustainability Exhibition is going on. Ten shuttle buses are plying between the QNCC and the exhibition center," he said.

Attiyah said films on environment are being screened at Katara.
