Qatar: Aurecon to use Gyproc systems on Doha Metro.
Gyproc's lightweight partition and shaft systems have been selected by Aurecon to meet additional performance and safety requirements on Doha Metro's Red Line South.
The line, which is being constructed 25m beneath central Doha, will form part of the new $36bn (QAR132bn) integrated metro system that is being developed by Qatar Rail ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Red Line South comprises a total of 14km of twin-bored tunnels linked by five underground stations, including one major interchange.
According to Gyproc, the depth and design of the stations, which are styled to mimic traditional Bedouin tents, places additional performance requirements on all building components - especially the internal walls and shafts, which are required to offer up to 180 minutes of fire resistance.
In terms of acoustic performance, the walls and shafts reportedly have to meet a minimum weight sound reduction index of 46 decibels (46RwdB), at heights of up to 5.7m, within tough deflection limits.
Gyproc pointed out that to meet the requirements, Aurecon specified its GypWall QUIET, a twin-frame acoustic wall system capable of providing up to 58 RwdB sound performance and the highest severe duty British Standard (BS5234) impact rating.
The consulting company also specified Gyproc's Shaftwall. Gyproc noted that the product was developed specifically for shaft lining in high-speed lift systems, and is more than capable of meeting the demanding pressure and deflection conditions of the new underground system.
The selected Gyproc products are to be installed by specialist sub-contractor, Imar Trading & Contracting, for main contractor, QDVC.
Due to become operational in 2019, the new Red Line South will provide a fast link between Doha's Hamad International airport and the city centre, for as many as 25,000 passengers a day.
