QVC AND GRUPO TELEVISA, S.A. LAUNCH MEXICO'S FIRST SHOPPING CHANNEL; CVC TELEMERCADO IS QVC'S SECOND INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH

WEST CHESTER, Pa., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Shopping will never be the same south of the border.
At noon Pacific time, QVC (NASDAQ: QVCN) and Grupo Televisa, S.A., in a joint venture, began CVC Telemercado Alameda. Directly translated, CVC, like QVC, stands for Quality, Value and Convenience.
CVC immediately reaches all of Mexico's 15 million television households. It will be "live" and distributed through television, cable television and satellite. Like its American counterpart, CVC operates 24 hours a day.
During the first hour of sales, Talina Fernandez, a well-known Mexican television personality, offered a wide selection of goods -- from jewelry to cookware. Fernandez is just one of several hosts who have joined CVC from Grupo Televisa.
State-of-the-art studios are located in Tijuana, customer service representatives are based in Mexico City and shipping originates in Queretaro.
CVC is the first foray by QVC into Latin America, but it will not be the last. Mike Boyd, president of QVC, said, "CVC, coupled with last month's launch of `QVC -- The Shopping Channel' in Great Britain, reflects our determination to take electronic retailing global. It's truly remarkable that QVC has succeeded in getting two international services up and running in just seven months."
QVC and Grupo Televisa, S.A., through CVC, intend to expand their Spanish language network throughout Latin America, Spain and eventually Spanish-speaking U.S. markets. The joint venture is planning a Portuguese language shopping service for Brazil and Portugal.
Francisco Cortina, CEO of CVC, said, "Undoubtedly consumers in Mexico will appreciate the great value and terrific service that CVC will offer, but just as important, we respect and intend to listen to our customers. We will offer high quality merchandise that reflects local taste." CVC will carry many of the products currently on sale through QVC, as well as a growing array of Mexican goods.
The Mexican launch is the second international electronic retailing service begun by QVC during 1993. On Oct. 1, "QVC -- The Shopping Channel" began sales in the United Kingdom. Peter Ridsdale, chief executive officer of QVC in Britain, said, "We take the best of the U.S. and Anglicize it. Yet, there are some products that are truly global."
QVC is the largest cable shopping channel in the United States. It is transmitted live, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. QVC currently reaches more than 44 million cable homes and 3 million homes with satellite dishes.
Grupo Televisa, S.A., through its subsidiaries, is the largest media company in Mexico, with interests in television production and broadcasting, international distribution of television programming, cable television, radio production and broadcasting, music recording, publishing, professional sports promotion, dubbing, feature film production, outdoor advertising, nationwide paging, special events promotion and satellite communications.
