Forget kids, even adults can be clueless about the fine art of cooking a boiled egg - just ask Delia Smith. The Family Cookbook by Good Housekeeping has these essential steps that children will use time and time again.

to boil an egg...

Bring a small pan of water to the boil. Once the water is boiling, add a medium egg. For a soft-boiled egg, cook for six minutes' for a salad egg, cook for eight minutes and for hard-boiled, cook for 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the egg from the hot water and serve.

to chop an onion...

Put the onion on a board and use a sharp knife to slice the onion in half from root to tip. Peel off the skin from each half, taking the thick outer layer of onion as well.

Put the flat sides down and make three horizontal cuts from the pointed end almost to the root.

Cut along its length six or seven times. Now chop across the width, from pointed end to root, to make dice.

to cook pasta...

Allow around 100g (3 1/2 oz) pasta per person.

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta and stir briefly to stop the strands or shapes sticking together. Cook for the time stated on the pack. When pasta is cooked, drain well, shake off excess water and add immediately to the sauce.
