JANUARY

Suicide

A seven-year-old named Annastasia Tilomalenga Kampulu is thought to have committed suicide while she was home alone in Walvis Bay's Tutaleni residential area the night of the 17th. Police reports said she hung herself.

Shooting

Sarah Mwilima (58), Director of the Global Fund program was shot to death at her work premises on 28th January by her colleague Simasiku Simataa Simasiku (33).

FEBRUARY

Entrepreneurship

Face of Namibia launched its fourth women and upcoming entrepreneurship expo at Walvis Bay on the 8th to announce the event that will take place at the end of March 2019. The expo aims to create a platform for positive change in young Namibian women by empowering them and preventing gender-based violence, which continues to haunt society. The mission is to fight poverty, encourage formal education, expose women to available economic and employment opportunities, minimise teenage pregnancies, educate young men and women to fight gender-based violence, and provide free access to social workers for professional counseling.

Gender Based Violence

Helao Gideon Hamuteta , a 22-year-old third-year Unam student, was allegedly killed stabbed to death by her boyfriend in the house she was staying with her cousin behind the Unam Hifikepunye Pohamna campus . The police said the boyfriend Paulus Nghipulenga , tried to hang himself with his shoelaces before he turned himself in at the Ongwediva roadblock.

Felisia Ndamononghenda Petrus was found lying dead on a bed in Windhoek's Goreangab settlement on the morning the 8th of February. She was strangled to death by her boyfriend.

MARCH

Somalia Freedom

Ifrah Ahmed , eight years after fleeing war in Somalia, was returned to her ravaged homeland with a mission to end the "Silent Killer" of female genital mutilation.

Politics

Nudo held its third elective extra-ordinary national congress this weekend of the 1st--3rd of March, with Esther Muinjangue emerging victorious as president of the party. This was a momentous occasion in politics, as she was the first ever elected female president of a political party in Namibia.

Rape

A 14 year old girl was raped by her 59-year old father in the Okakarara area. He is charged with rape and incest. The girl reported the rape to her teacher who then informed some family and the police.

Gender Based Violence

Justine Amweelo, a student from the International University of Management (IUM) was stabbed to death by her former boyfriend on the 28th of March 2019.

Germany Women's Day

Berliners will now get a day off on International Women's Day after local parliament declared it a public holiday on the 6th of March. The German capital is the only state that recognizes the day as a public holiday.

Law

Niger's top court has outlawed the practice of keeping women as maids and sex slaves known as "fifth wives", capping a decade-long legal battle by one victim that could inspire others in the West Africa nation to seek justice, lawyers and activists said.
