 QUALCOMM INKS $12 MILLION DEAL
 WITH INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHT WERNER ENTERPRISES
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ-NMS: WERN), one of the five largest truckload carriers in the nation, has awarded QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) a three-year contract valued at more than $12 million for its satellite-based, OmniTRACS(R) mobile communications system. The system's two-way message and position location capabilities will enable the carrier to maintain real-time communications and track its fleet of more than 2,700 dry vans and flatbeds.
Werner evaluated several alternatives, but felt that the OmniTRACS system offered the best value. "After completing a comprehensive cost analysis and field evaluation of the systems available, QUALCOMM emerged as the winner," said Jake Wood, president, Werner Enterprises. "Our operating strategy is simple -- everything we do must help ensure our customers receive the highest level of service possible. We believe that the OmniTRACS system gives us a tool to help do the job right."
Since its introduction in 1988, QUALCOMM has shipped more than 30,000 OmniTRACS terminals, primarily to carriers in the truckload, long-haul, irregular route market segment. QUALCOMM studies indicate this number represents about 10 percent of the estimated available U.S. market share within this portion of the industry. The system is also used on ships, airplanes, buses and emergency vehicles, as well as for oil and gas pipeline control and monitoring sites.
"Industry leaders such as Werner Enterprises exemplify the type of companies that are turning to QUALCOMM to help improve efficiency," said Tom Bernard, senior vice president and general manager for QUALCOMM, OmniTRACS Business Unit. "This year alone we have shipped 13,300 OmniTRACS units, a 55 percent increase over the previous year. Although we've made tremendous inroads, we've just scratched the surface. To support this ever-increasing demand, we will continue to enhance and refine our current product offering, and develop new products, that will bring the benefits of mobile communications technology to a broader range of users."
Headquartered in Omaha, Neb., Werner Enterprises Inc. operates throughout the continental United States and Canada as a truckload carrier of general commodities. Werner is traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol WERN.
QUALCOMM develops, manufactures, markets, licenses and operates advanced communications systems and products based on digital wireless technology. QUALCOMM's products include the OmniTRACS system and digital wireless telephone systems and products based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. The company also develops and markets a wide range of VLSI devices and is developing signal processing components for HDTV.
