QUAL-MED TO SUBMIT FINAL OFFER FOR CHAMPUS CALIFORNIA/HAWAII

PUEBLO, Colo., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Qual-Med Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: QLMD) received an instruction from the U.S. Department of Defense to present its best and final offer for the CHAMPUS Reform Initiative contract for California and Hawaii by June 1, 1993. Qual-Med is one of four competitors for the five-year, multibillion dollar contract, which last month had been delayed "indefinitely." The contract is expected to be awarded Aug. 1, 1993.
"We are pleased that the CHAMPUS award is going to be made soon," said Jerry Davis, Qual-Med vice president of marketing. "The continuation of a competitive bidding process will benefit military personnel and their dependents who will receive quality health care at greater savings to taxpayers. Only through real competition can the CHAMPUS Reform Initiative ensure access to a quality health care system, while controlling runaway fees and administrative costs.
"Qual-Med will present OCHAMPUS with a very competitive bid that meets the stringent requirements outlined by the Department of Defense," he added.
The multibillion dollar program to reform CHAMPUS -- the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services -- seeks to improve the quality, access and cost-efficiency of health care for over 750,000 eligible dependents of military personnel and retirees and their dependents in California and Hawaii.
Qual-Med, headquartered in Pueblo, provides comprehensive managed health care products and services to approximately 335,000 commercial HMO and Medicare Risk members in California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. Through its subsidiary, Preferred Health Network Inc., the company provides access to preferred provider networks in 16 states for more than 2.3 million covered persons. The company's common stock presently trades on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol "QLMD."
