QUAKER STATE CHANGES ITS BOTTLES FROM WHITE TO GREEN
OIL CITY, Pa., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Quaker State Corporation (NYSE: KSF) has changed the color of its quart bottle of motor oil from white to green.
By converting to green, Quaker State is able to incorporate recycled plastic in the content of the bottle and enhance consumer awareness of the product on the retail shelf.
The move to green is the most significant change in Quaker State's motor oil packaging since 1984, when the company led the motor oil industry with a nationwide conversion to plastic bottles.
Marketing Vice President W. Scott Chickering says, "Extensive consumer research proved that the green bottle is easier to find on the shelf, conveys a contemporary and high tech image, and rates higher overall in quality impression than the packages of our major competitors."
Chickering added, "Green has been Quaker State's primary color since the company was founded. So we were pleased that studies show a green bottle will make Quaker State more distinctive versus our competitors. That is a primary reason for the change."
The desire to encourage and enhance recycling was another major factor for making the change. Because recycled resins tend to be darker in hue, they could not be used readily in the white bottles, but they work well with the new, green color.
"The new bottle allows Quaker State to contribute to solving the country's environmental problems by putting 20 percent post-consumer reground plastic into each bottle," says Chickering. As more recycled materials become available and cost effective, the recycled plastic content of the green bottle can increase to as much as 50 percent.
Additionally, the green bottles contain a new green and black striped plastic label which is molded into the bottle during its manufacture. Incorporating this in-mold label means the entire bottle is itself recyclable.
The formulations of the various grades of Quaker State motor oil and automatic transmission fluid that will be packaged in the green bottles remain unchanged. To alleviate any consumer concerns, the new labels and newly designed shipping cartons include this reassurance: "New Green Bottle, Same Great Product."
