QUAKER STATE: SUBSIDIARY WILL VIGOROUSLY APPEAL UNREASONABLE CALIFORNIA COURT JUDGMENT

OIL CITY, Pa., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to a ruling by an Orange County, Calif., trial court denying motions to set aside or modify a jury verdict against Quaker State Corporation's (NYSE: KSF) wholly-owned subsidiary Heritage Life Insurance Company, Frank J. Cordon, chief executive officer of Heritage said, "We will aggressively continue the appeal process against an excessive and unreasonable jury verdict that is unsupported by the law and the facts. There was no evidence to support an award even remotely approaching the current $21.7 million judgment."
Cordon said, "Heritage is completing its most successful sales year ever. The court's ruling will have no impact on the ability of Heritage Life Insurance Company to maintain normal business operations and to continue to provide credit insurance policies to customers across the country."
The court action against Heritage Life was brought by two plaintiffs individually and doing business as Wescal Credit Insurance, a general agent of Heritage Life from 1984 to 1990. Heritage Life had contracted to issue credit life insurance policies which Wescal sold to home owners. The complaint alleged breach of contract and interference with prospective economic advantage. During the seven years that Wescal represented Heritage, it generated less than $300,000 in commissions.
Quaker State Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Herbert M. Baum noted that the judgment is solely against Heritage; Quaker State Corporation was not a party to the court proceedings. "Heritage Life Insurance Company has the economic strength to pay the full claim if it should be upheld," Baum said, "but we remain optimistic that the appeals court will overturn the outrageous jury verdict."
Baum also said that "This court case will have no impact on Quaker State's plans to increase advertising spending in 1994 in order to market our motor oil and other products and services more aggressively than ever before."
