QUADRAX CORPORATION SELECTED BY LOCKHEED AERONAUTICAL

PORTSMOUTH, R.I., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Quadrax Corporation (NASDAQ: QDRX) announced today that its advanced thermoplastic composite material has been selected by Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company as one of its composite material forms for potential structural thermoplastic components on the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter.
Quadrax competed against as many as 20 materials and product forms during the F-22 demonstration/validation period before achieving technical success and being selected as a material for the F-22 program. Quadrax's facility and process have been certified through a recent on- site inspection by F-22 quality assurance officials and will be undergoing interim audits to ensure compliance to F-22 specifications.
It is anticipated that initial supply of material to support construction of nine aircraft will be negotiated between Quadrax and the F-22 team in late 1993.
In August 1991, Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company and its two team members, Boeing and General Dynamics (GD has since been acquired by Lockheed Corporation and is now the Lockheed Ft. Worth Company) were awarded a multi-billion dollar engineering/manufacturing development contract to build nine F-22 twin engine fighters. The follow-on production program is currently scheduled to build 648 of these stealth vehicles, designed to fly at sustained supersonic speeds with minimum fuel consumption.
The Quadrax(R) Baxial Tape (QBT) product selected for the F-22 is based on Amoco's Radel 8320 Unidirectional (UD) Tape. Radel is a thermoplastic resin with outstanding toughness.
QBT is manufactured by formatting unidirectional prepreg tapes bidirectionally into a broadcloth up to 10 feet in width. It combines the high productivity of woven composites with the strength and performance of UD tape. QBT is substantially faster to lay up and form than hand or programmable UD tape-laying methods, resulting in lower cost parts without sacrificing part quality.
Quadrax Corporation is a supplier of advanced composite materials, equipment and services.
