QUADRAX CORPORATION ANNOUNCES CONTRACT WITH HYDE ATHLETIC INDUSTRIES

PORTSMOUTH, R.I., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Quadrax Corporation (NASDAQ: QDRX), announced today that it has received an order to supply advanced thermoplastic composite mid-foot support devices to Hyde Athletic Industries, Inc. (Peabody, Mass.) for its new Saucony "Vang" running shoe.
Quadrax is expected to initially supply 100,000 or more pairs of the specially designed devices under the current and future orders at the production rate of 50,000 pairs per month. The contract could increase substantially, however, if Hyde chooses to use similar devices for its other lines of athletic shoes. The Vang is scheduled for Jan. 1994 introduction and will be manufactured at Hyde's Bangor, Maine plant.
Richard A. Fisher, Quadrax chairman and CEO, noted that "This is the second important application of Quadrax materials for the sporting goods market." On June 15, 1993, the company announced an exclusive supply agreement with Kunnan Enterprise of Taiwan, the world's largest manufacturer of tennis racquets.
Mr. Fisher added, "Hyde placed very stringent cost and performance requirements on the material that would be used to manufacture these components, and our material met its needs. The ability to produce the composite molded device in volume is also important to Hyde."
The mid-foot support device is designed to support and enhance the three natural flex properties of the runner's foot -- front-to-back, side-to-side, and torsionally across the foot in the direction of travel.
The material combines lightweight durability with the ability to meet Hyde's requirement to support and enhance runners' natural foot flex patterns as well as enhancing the high-tech appearance of the shoe. The device will prevent the shoe from twisting to the side without hindering the gait cycle or regular flexing along the shoe's forward axis. At the same time, it enhances the high-tech appearance of the shoe.
The device is made of advance composites similar to materials supplied by Quadrax to Lockheed for the U.S. Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter aircraft (F-22), and to defense contractors for other demanding applications, using the same proprietary manufacturing technologies developed by Quadrax in connection with the F-22 and other aircraft programs.
Quadrax Corporation is a supplier of high performance thermoplastic advanced composite materials, value-added products and services to industrial, sporting goods, aerospace and marine markets for a broad range of structural applications.
