QMED OBTAINS NDX PATENT PROTECTION

LAURENCE HARBOR, N.J., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- qmed, Inc. (NASDAQ: QEKG) reported that it had been issued a broad based U.S. patent covering its nDx technology.
Michael W. Cox, CEO of qmed, commented, "Patent protection for nDx is an important event for the future of the Company because nDx is the only commercially available non-invasive method to automatically evaluate the competence of the autonomic nervous system." Cox went on to say, "nDx is also an important technological breakthrough benefit for insulin and non-insulin dependent diabetics, particularly in light of the heightened awareness that tighter glucose management can reduce the ravaging effects of glucose on the autonomic nervous system."
Cox continued to say, "autonomic dysfunction has also been correlated with an increased risk in diabetes for heart attacks, silent ischemia and sudden death. nDx has also been found extremely useful in identifying these, additional high-risk diabetics."
According to Cox, the results of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), a $150 million funded NIH study, illuminating the lifesaving benefits of tight glucose control, demonstrated a 60% reduction in the risk of developing diabetic nerve damage. The methods to study and analyze improvement in nerve damage included the specific procedures which are incorporated in qmed's patented nDx system.
According to spokesmen for qmed, nDx allows qmed to offer the diabetic population of over 14,000,000 patients the most extensively validated non-invasive system for assessing diabetic complications surrounding autonomic dysfunction and cardiovascular risks.
