QATAR AWARDS FIRST MIDDLE EASTERN GSM CONTRACT TO MOTOROLA

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced today at MECOM/Middle East Broadcast '93 that Qatar Public Telecommunications Corp. (Q-Tel) awarded a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) contract to Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG).
GSM represents the world's first digital cellular system standard. Developed in Europe, it is the only standard to specify an open interface between cell sites and switches. As a result, customers can purchase system components from more than one vendor. The Qatar system will consist of Motorola Base Station Systems (BSS) and Siemens EWSD (R) switches to be integrated by Motorola. The award, valued at $28 million (U.S.) is for a nationwide system employing two switches and more than 20 cell sites with a subscriber capacity of 25,000. The system is expected to be in-service in January 1994.
Qatar, with a population of more than half a million people and an economy based largely on oil and natural gas, is eagerly awaiting the GSM network. Not only is it one of the largest communications projects undertaken by the government, it is the first announcement of a GSM award in the Middle Eastern region. Q-Tel, is the government telecommunications entity that owns and operates all communications services in the country.
"This award is significant for Q-Tel and Motorola," said Pertti Johansson, vice president and director of Motorola's International Cellular Infrastructure Division, CIG. "We are happy to expand our presence as a supplier to this region of the world and to meet the needs of our customers by providing advanced technologies and expertise. As a result of the continuing growth and success of GSM in Europe, areas such as the Middle East are rapidly embracing GSM."
Qatar represents Motorola's eighth GSM award to date and is Motorola's first such award outside of Europe. Others include the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Spain and a test system in France.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular telephones, infrastructure equipment and systems. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, system components and services for worldwide markets. The company's dedication to quality earned it the first prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the highest level of national recognition for quality that a United States company can receive.
