Q & A; The People's consumer Champion.

Byline: with Dean Dunham

QI want to make a claim in relation to my stepdad's will. How long do I have to do this? Anonymous

AI ASSUME you will be making a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975. These claims must be brought within six month of the grant of probate or, when there is no will, letters of administration.

QI HIRED a car via an airline's website. When I got to the desk there had been a mix-up and no car was available. I've been refunded but I have also asked the airline for compensation. They said I have to take it up with the car rental company. Is this right? Stephen Kemp

AIT depends on the terms and conditions at the point you made Your legal questions answered. Send your questions to askdean@people.co.uk the booking on their website. If they make clear they are simply facilitating the car hire and therefore not contracting with you then it will be right. If not, you will have contracted with the airline and they will be liable.

QI ORDERED decking boards online. When they arrived, they were a terrible standard so I called to reject them and ask for a refund. The trader says that they were advertised as "rejects" so I can't get a refund? Percy Tilley

ATHE trader is correct. You can't reject them as "faulty" as they were clearly advertised as such and no doubt the price reflected this. Still, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations you have the right to reject the boards and claim a refund, so long as you do this within 14 days of the goods being delivered.

QI HAVE been trying to get a refund from Curry's for a stereo but they fob me off because I can't find the receipt. What now? Roger Ashwood

ARETAILERS are entitled to ask for "proof of purchase" but it doesn't have to be a till receipt. A bank or credit card statement will suffice.
