Putting brakes on our driving.

IN 2012 and 2013, Middlesbrough Council rolled out 20mph speed limits on 1,365 residential roads in areas including in Acklam, Marton and Brookfield.

They were in addition to 20mph zones which were previously introduced in areas such as Linthorpe and central Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile Stockton Council has also put 20mph limits into practice on a number of roads, including Piper Knowle Road, close to Harrow Gate Primary School.

And it has imposed a zone reducing traffic to a maximum of 20mph on Oxford Road, Thornaby.

In Redcar and Cleveland, a council spokesman said the local authority has no plans to introduce blanket 20mph limits.

But the borough council does support them and some 20mph zones are already in existence, such as on Tawney Road, Grangetown.
