Put your foot down.

Put Your Foot Down

Larry Lunn and David Brown decided it was time to stop using bricks, books and potted plants to hold doors open. So they put their foot down--and created the Door Stopper, a springaction, plastic-coated steel doorstop that really works. The foot-operated doorstop compresses and then releases under a door, creating upward force that makes it immovable. The Door Stopper's creators are officers of Lunn Associates, Inc. Lunn is the owner and Brown, vice president of special operations.

DoorStopper's upward force makes it wind resistant and very easy to use. It is operated entirely by the foot and requires no kicking, wedging or bending. The steel spring is coated with protective plastic to prevent marring and scratching. It is available in black, red, white and almond. Because the DoorStopper can be custom imprinted, it can come in handy for promotional uses, fund-raisers, or even company gift-giving.

The idea to create a better doorstop began brewing about five years ago when Brown, then the owner of a machine shop, mentioned his dissatisfaction with the "same 100-year-old wedge" to Lunn, his attorney. The Door Stopper, however, became a reality only this year during the construction of a sorority house by Lunn Associates on the Indiana University campus. When workers couldn't get a set of doors to stay open, Lunn and Brown set to work making the Door Stopper.

The doorstop progressed swiftly through developmental stages. Last February, Door Stopper was introduced to the public at the National Home Center Show in Chicago. The massive response was "beyond our wildest dreams," says Brown.

Lunn Associates now has orders from as far as Guam, and has sales representatives in nine different agencies, covering 30 states. Door Stopper will hit the retail market sometime in September, but it can be special-ordered through Brown at the company's Indianapolis office.

Lunn Associates now has a special operations division from which more products like Door Stopper can be expected. It has been in the building, contracting and developing business for about 10 years.
