Put families in the picture; ECHO.

NOBODY in Merseyside will be surprised by the news that South Yorkshire Police has refused to reveal if families of Hillsborough victims were spied on.

Their response to a Freedom of Information request follows last month's refusal by the Met Police to confirm or deny whether undercover officers were used to spy on people.

Both forces have used legalese and long-winded explanations to justify their lack of information, but this is simply unacceptable.

It is absolutely fundamental that this matter is cleared up once and for all - for the sake of the families, truth and justice.

Some people may believe that in saying nothing - one way or another - the police are saying everything.

It would be far better for all concerned if the police had the courage to come out and make a clear and definitive statement.
