Purac's Developments.

The manufacturers of lactic acid and derivatives, Purac, have just built a biomaterials manufacturing plant in Gorinchem, The Netherlands, tel:+31 183 695 695, fax:+31 183 695 600, to meet the growing market demands for their Purasorb lactide and glycolide monomers and biodegradable (co)polymers.

This recently completed Biomaterials facility complies with the latest requirements for the current Good Manufacturing Practices and forms a basis for the continuing expansion of their Purasorb activities.

Also Purac are using lactic acid to decontaminate beef, pork and poultry carcasses, which results in a safer meat and poultry supply without negatively affecting the quality.

A 2% lactic acid solution is sprayed on to the carcass as the final wash, resulting in a 90 to 99.9% reduction of pathogenic bacteria such as E.coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes. Only the bacteria are killed by the lactic acid and, when applied, as the final carcass wash it also acts as a strong growth inhibitor.
