Pupils in awe of stage star.

WEST End star Peter Karrie dropped in on schoolchildren to help them rehearse for a concert.

The Phantom of the Opera singer visited Ysgol Betws y Coed in Conwy Valley.

He has played the lead role in Phantom of the Opera - a role also popularised by Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em star Michael Crawford.

Headteacher Ifan Jones, whose school has 34 pupils, said: "They were on a high all day.

"I don't think they had heard of him before. We expected him at 2pm but he was delayed and he got here at 3pm.

"They were all in awe of him. Total silence. He was down to earth, charming and softly spoken but he has a presence."

Mr Jones explained that the youngsters rehearsed two songs from Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with the boys and girls - Close Every Door and Any Dream Will Do. Eighteen pupils sang those songs with Peter plus two more from their Christmas show called "The Stable" last night at Betws y Coed Memorial Hall.

Mr Jones added: "Peter signed a few autographs for the children who couldn't make it to the concert. Then he went off to look for somewhere to stay." Peter has embarked on a North Wales tour of concerts in Barmouth, Holyhead and Aberdyfi this week.. The Stable will be performed at Betws y Coed Memorial Hall on Tuesday, December 14 at 6pm.
