Pupils climb aboard for food ideas.

SCHOOL children cooked up a treat when a special bus rolled up.

The Cooking Bus spent a week at Green Lane School in Acklam, Middlesbrough, helping teachers, parents and pupils to learn cooking techniques.

On board the bus, which opens out into a purpose built kitchen/classroom, children learned how to make fresh healthy food. They produced salmon and dill fishcakes and Greek salad.

The Food for Life Partnership Cooking Bus is part of a pounds 16.9m BIG Lottery funded programme to transform food culture in schools and communities.

Teachers and parents attended an 'open house' session where they learned how to make Caribbean red pepper salsa, cheesy vegetable parcels, and strawberry and rhubarb twist.

Children also learned to make cheesy vegetable parcels, friendship pizza, kaleidoscope cous cous and potato and beetroot salad.

Anita Cormac, director of Focus on Food campaign, said: "If we want people to eat well and have more choice in what they eat they have to be taught to cook well first. Most young people leave school without basic cooking skills. Their heads are full of health messages, but they have no means of taking real practical control of their food lives."
