Pupils bowl over judges.

St john's Comprehensive School in Bishop Auckland has won the pounds 500 first prize in a competition designed to give students the chance to learn about careers in construction.

The St John's team beat five other County Durham schools to win the Enterprise in Construction Challenge with a proposal for redevelopment of the area around Bishop Auckland Viaduct in the Wear Valley into a leisure complex including a cinema, bowling alley and restaurant.

FARMER Robert Carter has been elected president of Cumberland Agricultural Society. Mr Carter, who farms at Gerrard House, Wigton, near Carlisle, has been involved with the Cumberland Show for years.
