"We have been very silent for a long time," said Pedro Julio Serrano, president of the gay rights group Puerto Rico for all. "Doing this press conference is like an awakening. Activists that aren't even part of the LGBT community came together to form a front to say, 'We have to stop this.'"
Puerto Rican gay men and lesbians still face routine violence and discrimination, Serrano said, but progress has been made in recent years, including challenges to the country's antisodomy law.
