Puerto Rican media bash.

Homophobic slurs are common in Puerto Rican media, but when a caller to a popular radio program said gays should be beheaded, it was too much for some in this U.S. island commonwealth. A coalition of more than 25 human rights organizations and gay activists held a press conference April 5 to announce plans to file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commissions and ask the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to investigate increasing attacks on the gay community in television and radio programs.

"We have been very silent for a long time," said Pedro Julio Serrano, president of the gay rights group Puerto Rico for all. "Doing this press conference is like an awakening. Activists that aren't even part of the LGBT community came together to form a front to say, 'We have to stop this.'"

Puerto Rican gay men and lesbians still face routine violence and discrimination, Serrano said, but progress has been made in recent years, including challenges to the country's antisodomy law.
