Public safety 'is police's priority'.

Police have their task cut out as thousands of visitors flock to Manama's business heart daily for shopping and relaxation.

Seef Mall alone attracts an average of 23,000 visitors daily, according to figures released by Exhibitions Police Station chief Colonel Adel Ahmed Al Mehza'a.

The number of shoppers soars to around 30,000 during the weekends, with visitors flocking in from neighbouring countries.

A major bulk of the visitors finds accommodation in Manama as most hotels are concentrated in the capital.

"The growing business activity requires security strategies to maintain public order, ensure the safety of citizens and tourists in such vital business and tourist destinations," Colonel Al Mehza'a said.

Located near Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIECC), the station covers 14 residential blocks, in addition to Seef area, which houses five malls that are among the largest in Bahrain.

The police department has gone hi-tech, with cutting-edge technology being incorporated to expedite and streamline work.

"A unified automated system is now being used to file cases and record complaints and witnesses' testimony, which cannot be altered," Colonel Al Mehza'a said.

The new automated system required all policemen to be qualified to deal with the hi-tech equipment.

All police stations across Bahrain have also been equipped with security surveillance cameras to document all measures.

According to updated figures, the BIECC police station dealt with 2,762 cases, up from 2,288 and 1,891 in 2012 and 2011 respectively.

He said the role of the station's community police team is to reach out to the public in all activities and students at schools to enhance their awareness about important matters in life.

"Courses and lectures are provided to policemen to enhance their commitment to the principles of Public Security forces such as activeness, swift response, transparency, humanity, partnership and accountability.

"The station is always dedicated to protecting the security of the public through deployment of patrols round the clock and police presence at all events within its district.

"Deployment of police forces also covers duties related to protection of crime scenes until the arrival of experts concerned," he added.
