A VIOLENT criminal who launched a vicious knife attack on a pub darts player has been convicted of attempted murder.

Gary Welch lashed out at Brian McCabe with a blade at Jo's Bar in Leith Walk, Edinburgh, last August. Welch - who has previous convictions for serious assault and robbery - carried out the unprovoked attack while on bail.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his jaw and eye. He told the High Court in Edinburgh he thought he was "a goner". The 25-year-old, described in court as a prisoner, denied attempted murder. But a jury found him guilty by a majority verdict. Lord Jones deferred sentence until next month for reports.
