Psychic Sandra: SILENT KILLER; How to ward off effects of ciggie smoke.

Byline: Sandra Ramdhanie

PASSIVE smoking is suspected of killing thousands of non-smokers every year.

It can also cause or worsen respiratory infections, sinus and ear infections and asthma.

Other than avoiding smoky places, you can protect yourself from the effects of second-hand smoke by taking a daily multivitamin that includes these antioxidants:-

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects cell membranes. Wheatgerm is a potent natural source of this Vitamin.

If you are on medication for high blood pressure, or blood-thinning medicines, check with your doctor before taking vitamin E in supplement form.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that also functions as a powerful antioxidant. Citrus fruits and their juices and most fresh fruit and vegetables are rich natural sources of this essential vitamin.

Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which helps the body eliminate smoke-associated toxins.

Eating three or four Brazil nuts every day provides your body with an adequate dose of selenium from a natural source

Beta-carotene, in conjunction with other carotenes, acts as an antioxidant and immune system booster. Other members of the antioxidant carotene family include alpha-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein and lycopene. Yellow, orange and red foods, such as oranges, mangoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and red, yellow and orange peppers, are convenient natural sources.

Coenzyme Q10 is essential in cellular energy production and has antioxidant properties that help protect the body from free radicals. Supplying the body with sufficient amounts of the nutrient can help prevent heart and circulation problems.

Approximately 75 per cent of heart patients are found to be deficient in CoQ-10. A deficiency may also have a direct impact on many other body functions.

Because high concentrations are also stored in the liver, maintaining an adequate supply of CoQ-10 and preventing a deficiency can help improve your liver function.

Taking a Co Q-10 supplement can strengthen the immune system and help fight off infection. It helps reverse the effects of aging naturally, protecting and strengthening the heart and cardiovascular system.

It can also help normalize high blood pressure without side effects.
