Protest five dig in deep.

Five protesters were facing their third night in a tunnel in a bid to block a pounds 65 million road scheme.

They have burrowed 40 ft below the A30 near Exeter and have defied all efforts to remove them.

Devon's Under-Sheriff is leading an eviction operation and has warned the protesters that they could face arrest when they surface.

Expert tunnellers have reached the protesters' shaft but have not yet penetrated a 6in-thick steel-plated door blocking the tunnel because of safety fears.

Earlier, more protesters were removed from nearby tree houses.
