Promoting Navy history in Boston.

The oldest ship in the Navy served as setting for a young officer's promotion earlier this month, as Defense Contract Management Agency Boston contract administrator and active duty Navy Supply Corp officer Imani Charles became a full lieutenant.

A flotilla of tall ships joined the historic USS Constitution in Boston Harbor for the annual Navy Week. The highlight for many was the 4th of July turnaround cruise of the Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, featuring a 21-gun salute exchange with nearby Fort Independence.

Lt. Charles, however, will likely remember the week better for his promotion ceremony aboard the ship. Capt. Russell Pendergrass, Commander of DCMA Eastern Regional Command, presided at the event, attended by Lt. Charles' wife Cindy and many of his DCMA colleagues.

"I could not think of a more fitting setting for Lt. Imani's promotion than the USS Constitution, the nation's oldest commissioned warship," said Capt. Frank Sarra, DCMA Boston commander. He added that Cmdr. Matthew Bonner, the Constitution's commanding officer, and his crew were very accommodating hosts.

"Lt. Imani Charles is a stellar example of the young, patriotic talent that still endures more than 200 years later, willing to answer our nation's call to serve and defend in wartime," Capt. Sarra said. "I am sure this day was a memorable event that he and his family will cherish as a highlight of his military career."

Lt. Charles has deployed for a 270-day Individual Augmentee (IA) assignment to Afghanistan.

The Constitution is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, and welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year.
