BEIRUT: Minister of State for Women's Affairs Jean Ogasapian Monday launched a project to estimate the economic cost of violence against women in Lebanon. The project aims to introduce a comprehensive reform plan regarding the status of women and to establish a scientific foundation aimed to reduce the incidence of gender-based violence in line with international conventions. The project has been undertaken with cooperation from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, the United Nations Population Fund and the Central Administration of Statistics -- a government entity that collects, processes, produces and disseminates social and economic statistics at the national level. The project comes as part of the government's efforts to develop a national strategy to combat gender-based violence and provide services to victims.
