Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry, vol. 3.

Volume 3 of the series "Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry", committed to reporting highlights from the heterocyclic chemistry literature of 1990, has now appeared. The book opens with reviews on asymmetric synthesis of azetidinones, and on annelation effects in the thiophene series. Chapters 3 to 8 are organized, as in volumes 1 and 2, from three membered to eight membered and larger rings, with subdivision based on number/variety of heteroatoms. These chapters are comprehensive, and well referenced from the 1989 and 1990 literature. Specific reactions, such as the inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reaction and directed lithation (both reviewed in volume 1), continue to find use, as do applications of free radical reactions, in heterocyclic syntheses.

This reviewer's copy contained a publishing fault in that pages 65-72 and 73-80 were duplicated. This aside, the volume is well produced from camera ready copy. It is a book for chemists in industry and universities, and is reasonably priced at $50.00 (soft cover).
