Productivity zone: new functionality enhances massive assembly designs.
UGS PLM Software, a division of Siemens, offers new functionality in the latest release of UGS Solid Edge[TM] V20 software, which can help boost the performance of massive unit assembly designs.
According to the company, UGS Solid Edge is a powerful hybrid 2D/3D design system and core component of the UGS Velocity Series[TM] portfolio, which provides part and assembly modeling, along with drafting, transparent data management and built-in finite element analysis. This latest release aids in designs that often include part counts well over 100,000 components.
System performance and the management of larger design teams often present challenges in these situations. But UGS feels that by adding zones and drawing review features to its software, there's a greater focus on both improving performance and streamlining collaboration. To this end, the software hones in on data reuse and replication by providing tools tailored to produce quicker data replications.
For example, V20's zones let you open a subset of an assembly to help you focus on one specific areas of responsibility, or define a permanent design envelope that isolates the subsystem area of the larger design for which you are responsible. Zone content is also automatically kept up-to-date.
The key here is that defining zones allows each user to open only what they are responsible for in speeding overall system performance. Furthermore, V20 introduces an inactive drawing mode for faster drawing access, which the company believes is ideal for designers who need frequent access to massive assembly drawings. This new review feature allows you to open drawings in seconds and provides further detailing, annotating, reviewing and printing capabilities.
Finally, this latest version of V20 has improved upon the copy, move and rotate tools for manipulating and replicating parts, assemblies or component groups. This feature is part of the software's new fast assembly part replication functionality, which improves overall productivity.
