Product from Enzymatic Therapy provides heartburn relief.

First there was the purple pill, now there is the orange pill. Correction: orange peel, as in orange peel extract. In an interesting turn of events, a fruit once considered a no-no for heartburn sufferers -- the orange -- is now being heralded as a potential long-term remedy in a multi-billion dollar industry.

Recent tests indicate orange peel extract, or more specifically, a key ingredient called d-Limonene which naturally occurs in citrus and a wide variety of other plant species, can prevent occasional heartburn, greatly reducing the number of occasional heartburn incidents.

There are two theories regarding how orange peel extract works:

1) orange peel extract may promote healthy peristalsis, the normal function of the body to move food and fluid from one place to another.

2) orange peel extract may work as a surfactant, reducing the surface tension of the liquid contents in the stomach

Researchers have applied for a patent for Heartburn Free, a proprietary 20-day preventative regimen shown in a clinical trial to provide relief to nearly 90 percent of participants by day 14.

Enzymatic Therapy (Green Bay, WI; 312-988-4102) began distributing the product to health food stores in December. Heartburn Free is the first heartburn product with orange peel extract. The orange peel extract used in Heartburn Free is standardized to contain a minimum of 98.5% d-limonene.

While there may be immediate positive effects on occasional heartburn starting with the first dose, the full regimen results in optimal, long lasting relief -- relief that lasts well beyond the last dose on day 20. Additional research is ongoing to determine just how long the posittive effects last.

"Heartburn Free is unique because it actually addresses the underlying cause of occasional heartburn, rather than simply masking symptoms," said Dr. Decker Weiss, a naturopathic physician and member of the Enzymatic Therapy Scientific Advisory Board. "Further, it does not interfere with healthy stomach acid levels nor does it inhibit mineral absorption or protein digestion, problems related to use of other heartburn products."

Even though occasional heartburn itself is not considered a disease, heartburn is often quite distressing, accounting for significant pain and discomfort. As many as 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month. Heartburn Free is not intended for persistent or chronic heartburn, which is a serious condition for which a health care professional should be consulted.

Existing treatment options, such as antacids, proton pump inhibiters, H2 blockers and even surgery, may help chronic sufferers, but often interfere with healthy stomach acid levels and mineral absorption or protein digestion. Until now, the options have been limited: either live with the burning, or live with diarrhea, constipation, headache, nausea, drowsiness, muscle spasms, depression and the other potential side effects of traditional products.

Since Terry Lemerond founded the company in 1981, Enzymatic Therapy has introduced some unique firsts to the United States health market including Ginkgo Biloba and Glucosamine Sulfate. More recently, Enzymatic Therapy introduced a number of clinically studied and immensely popular products including Vitaline CoQ10 and Eskimo-3, and scientifically based, proprietary formulas, such as Cell Forte with IP-6 and Inositol, 7-Keto Naturalean and Indolplex.

Enzymatic Therapy distributes the Enzymatic Therapy and Prevail brands to health food stores and the PhytoPharmica brand to pharmacies. Integrative Therapeutics distributes PhytoPharmica, Tyler, NF Formulas and Vitaline brands to health care professionals. Integrative Therapeutics is the largest manufacturer of professional-line dietary supplements in the industry.
