Product Risk Management.

How to deal with a crisis and reduce the risk to the produce is really what this book is all about. Nowadays there are legal obligations and liabilities that arise because of current legislation that companies cannot afford to ignore. Mr Abbott reviews the legislation in the OECD countries and explains how a company should draw up a product safety strategy to cover both its activities throughout the product's whole life cycle. Such a technique must even include the dreaded possibility of a product recall.

Product risk management is a very wide-ranging subject, as the author says, and his text is designed to provide a structure for this topic. In fact, it is true to say that virtually every part of a company can make a contribution. Case histories demonstrate only too well what has gone before but there is much to be learnt from them. The underlying principle is that product risks are a management problem; they have to be managed just like other aspects of a company - production, sales, marketing, finance or distribution. It is always a management failure that ultimately causes the defect that leads to damage and costs. Product risk management aims to reduce the chance of that happening, whilst still accepting that no product can be totally safe for everyone, everywhere, every time. Sooner or later every company will make a bad product or have a rogue one.

From the food industry readers' point of view, this book is not particularly addressed to them because it deals with the risks involved right across industry and commerce but nevertheless some of the case histories concern food products. Part 1 deals with The law and product liability and looks at the legal situation in the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the US. Part 2 covers Product risk management with chapter titles; Product safety policy; Product risk reduction; Product risk transfer; Product risk retention; Product extortion and malicious product tamper; Product risk management audit; Product risk management checklist - 100 questions. Part 3 deals with case histories and amongst these are Design failures, Manufacturing failures, Information failures and Criminal cases. Under manufacturing failures one finds sections on The poisoning of Michigan, Aberdeen typhoid outbreak, Potted meat and botulism, and Yogurt and botulism.
