Prodigy Increases Monthly Rate for Dial Internet Service; New Rate to be Closely Followed by New Portal, User Software.

Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 2001

Prodigy Communications (Nasdaq:PRGY), a leading Internet service provider (ISP) serving the largest number of DSL Internet subscribers, today announced plans to increase its unlimited dial service from $19.95/month to $21.95/month.

The price increase is effective October 1, 2001, for new Prodigy members, and November 1, 2001, for current members.

This is the first time Prodigy has raised its monthly rate since launching Prodigy Internet service in 1995. With the price increase, Prodigy's monthly rate is competitive with or lower than other national ISPs.

Prodigy announced during its July 26, 2001, Q2 earnings call that before the end of the year, it would increase its monthly rate and at the same time offer new features and services.

Prodigy customers will see the first phase of a completely redesigned Prodigy service in November when it launches its new portal. The new portal will feature improved content, a new "look and feel" that makes the site easier to use and navigate, and more customization options. By the end of the year, Prodigy will widely release Prodigy 7.0, featuring a customized browser that utilizes Microsoft's newest release of Internet Explorer 6.0 and functionality developed for the more demanding broadband and dial user.

"This is the first time in six years that Prodigy has raised its monthly rate for dial services, and we believe customers will like what they see with our completely redesigned product," said Paul Roth, president and chief executive officer. "Prodigy has rebuilt its portal and software to enhance our services for both our dial and broadband customers, while setting the foundation for future broadband-enabled services that are in development."
