Proceedings of Organ Transplantation and Aesthetic Surgery Conference at Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore.

Kidney and Liver transplantations unit at Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex in collaboration with the Dept. of Plastic surgery organized a two days conference on "Organ Transplantation and Aesthetic Surgery at a local hotel recently. The objective was to highlight the need for organ donation and to promote deceased-organ transplantation in the country. The conference attracted eminent Transplant Surgeons, Transplant Physicians and Plastic Surgeons from across the country. The speakers included eminent medical personalities in this field like Prof. Adeeb-ul-Hasan Rizvi from SIUT (Karachi) and Prof. Saeed Akhtar from Shifa International Hospital (Islamabad), while renowned Religious Scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil also graced the occasion with his presence.

Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal Senior Vice President CPSP was the chief guest on this occasion while Health adviser to Chief Minister Punjab Khawaja Salman Rafique, Senator Dr. Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Health Secretary Jawad Rafiq Malik and Justice Syed Afzaal Haider were invited as the Guest-of-honor. The scientific programme covered all important aspects like Organ Donation as well as Deceased-donor Transplantation from a holistic point-of-view.

Religious and Ethical Aspects of Organ Donation were covered in the first session which was moderated by Prof. Dr. Arshad Kamal Butt. Maulana Tariq Jamil discussed the religious aspects, whereas the legal Aspects of Organ Donation were explained in detail by Justice Syed Afzal Haider. Chairman SZMC, Prof. Farid Ahmad Khan highlighted the organ reconstruction perspective of organ transplantation. Prof. Adeeb-ul-Hasan Rizvi discussed the Ethical Aspects of Organ Donation with reference to Transplant Law, and the role of Human Organ Transplant Association (HOTA) to prohibit Organ trafficking in the country. Prof Khalid Masood Gondal promised to start second Fellowship in Organ transplantation and reconstruction at Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore from January 2016. Khawaja Salman Rafiq reassured that Government of Punjab was fully aware of the problems and will facilitate in establishing Deceased Donor Organ transplantation programme at Shaikh Zayed Hospital.

In the next session how to establish "Deceased Donor Organ Transplantation Programme" in Pakistan was discussed in detail. An important salient feature of this session was a Webcast from Ireland by Prof. Justin Geoghan, sharing his insights on this subject. Prof. Saeed Athar also shared his views and gave the audience an update on the research centre to be established by Punjab Government for Renal and Liver Diseases. Prof. Badar us Saleheen talked about achievements in Deceased Donor Organ Transplantation Programme in Pakistan. Neurosurgeons, Prof. Khalid Mehmood and Prof. Kamran Hussain discussed brain death as well as the reasons why Deceased Donor Organ procurement was still crawling in Pakistan.

Later on the participants were divided in three segments. In the "Kidney Transplantation" group Prof. Hafiz Shahzad, Head of Kidney Transplant Program at SZH was the main speaker. He gave some useful suggestions which can be implemented to overcome Organ shortage for transplantation. President PAUS (Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons) Prof. Mumtaz Ahmad discussed a few examples how PAUS could play a vital role. Prof. Nouman Tareef presented recent updates on Immuno suppression while Prof. Hafiz Ijaz Ahmed discussed post-transplant infections. The session ended with case presentations by Dr. Nadir Hussain and Dr. Nasir Ibrahim covering latest updates with respect to complications and management of transplant patients.

The main highlight of the "Liver Transplantation" segment was a series of Live Video Conferences aligned by Prof. Tariq Bangash, Head of Liver Transplant Programme at SZH. The webcasts featured Dr. Neerav Goyal and Prof. Subhash Gupta from Apollo Hospital (India) as well as Prof. Donal Maguire from U.K covering different aspects of Living-Donor Liver Transplantation. Prof Altaf Alam and Prof. Arif Amir Nawaz highlighted different aspects of Hepatitis B and C in liver transplantation. Dr Nusrat Yar Khan and Dr. Saleh from Shifa International Liver Transplant Unit Islamabad presented different case studies on the said subject. The session ended with a brief update on the remarkable achievements of Liver Transplant Unit at SZH, presented by Dr. Amir Latif.

The 3rd segment covered "Aesthetic Surgery", with reference to skin and hair transplantation as well as different aspects of reconstructive surgery such as Hand Transplantation, Breast Reconstruction, Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Fat Grafting, Periorbital Rejuvenation/Blepharoplasty, Soft Face Lift, Mastopexy, Role of Stem Cell In modern medicine and Botox/Fillers. Live Webinar was organized from Harley Street by Dr. Azhar Aslam on Liposuction and Breast Augmentation. The highlight of this session was a Video Conference by the First Hand Transplant Surgeon, Warren Breidenach of Arizona University. The Conference mainly focussed on Highlighting The Evolution of Organ Transplantation from an Internal to External Perspective. The conference ended with the distribution of mementoes acknowledging the valuable contribution of medical experts in the field of transplantation.
