Probe into book agent.

DETECTIVES are investigating a literary agent over complaints by aspiring authors that he ripped them off.

Christopher Hill, 34, ran the Hill and Hill agency from home in Tranent, East Lothian, with dozens of writers on his books.

Contrary to standard practice, Hill charged clients thousands of pounds in fees.

Writers were shocked to discover the agency had shut down their website and phones. Some had been told major deals were imminent.

The Record yesterday tracked Hill down in East Lothian. He said: "I did run an agency until it went pear-shaped.

"I have repaid around pounds 3500 to clients and manuscripts have been returned."

A police spokesman said: "We are looking into complaints."
