Principles of Painting with Bill Martin.

This set of two videotapes presents one artist's somewhat traditional approach to painting in oils. The artist-narrator demonstrates how he approaches the painting of a still life in tape one, and a landscape in tape two. In both, he begins with basic forms, using didactics to explain color theory. Captions summarize and clarify the principles and concepts being presented. As the paintings develop, the artist discusses brush selection and use, and demonstrates his procedures: drawing on canvas from a sketch, roughing in the image and beginning the application of paint. He is especially helpful in color mixing to attain desired hues. While basically a how-to series, any student of painting from high school through retirement years would benefit from watching a good painting evolve and listening to the suggestions of this capable artist-teacher.
