Princess Peach.

Embroider a sweet girl's dress that works as a transition piece from spring to summer. Pair it with a long-sleeved shirt on cooler days or wear it over a swimsuit on beach days. Make the dress reversible for even more wearing options.

+ Girl's dress pattern (such as
the BurdaStyle Girl's Beach
Dress; see "Sources")

+ Lightweight cotton fabric &
notions according to pattern
(See "Sources.")

+ Thread: all-purpose,
bobbin & rayon embroidery
(See "Sources.")

+ Needles: 80/12 universal &
75/11 embroidery

+ Lightweight cut-away
stabilizer (See "Sources.")

+ Temporary spray adhesive

+ Removable fabric marker
(See "Sources.")

+ Embroidery design
(approximately 3"x6"; size
according to dress pattern &
placement; see "Design")

* Trace the dress-front pattern onto
the outer fabric right side using a
removable fabric marker. Print a
template of the chosen embroidery
design and audition it on the dress
front. When satisfied with the placement,
mark the design center cross
marks onto the fabric right side.
Additionally, mark the design perimeter
to ensure proper placement.

* Hoop the fabric with lightweight
mesh cut-away stabilizer, centering
the design marks within the hoop. If
desired, use temporary spray adhesive
to adhere the stabilizer to the
fabric for extra security.

* Load the design onto the machine.
Use the perimeter basting function,
if applicable, to baste the design
perimeter onto the fabric and
double-check the placement.

* Embroider the design, changing
thread colors as desired to match
the fabric.

* Remove the fabric from the hoop;
clip jump threads on the fabric
wrong side. Cut away as much of
the stabilizer as possible beyond
the design perimeter.

* Carefully press the fabric from
the wrong side. (If using a heat-removable
marker to trace the
pattern, press inside the pattern
outline to avoid removing
the marks.)

* Triple-check the design placement
on the dress front. If satisfied with
the placement, cut out the dress
front. If the placement is off, remove
the fabric marks and retrace the
pattern outline onto the fabric right
side; cut out the pattern.

* Cut out the remaining fabric pieces,
using contrasting fabric for the
pockets and piping, if applicable.

* Construct the dress following the
pattern guidesheet.

* To make the dress reversible, construct
the outer and lining dress
along the side and shoulder seams
so they're hidden, leaving the outer
and lining hems separate. Turn the
dress and lining wrong side out. Fold
each hem 1 Vi toward the wrong side;
press. Turn the dress right side out.
Pin the hems together, matching the
folds. Topstitch the lower edge. Stitch
again 1" from the lower edge.

Note: On the featured dress, the reverse
side won't have pockets. Adding them to
the lining side per the outer dress instructions
will result in a bulky pocket that's
more difficult to use.
