Priest fury at Dervla's 'guilt' claim.
A PRIEST yesterday slammed actress Dervla Kirwan for complaining of the burden of "Catholic guilt".
Fr Tom Cox said the 30-year-old Ballykissangel star should "deal with it and let go".
Guilt is "normal", he added, and it is too easy to find a scapegoat.
In a recent interview, Dervla told how she moved away from Catholicism.
She said: "I am not a practising Catholic. I've had enough of being burdened with Catholic guilt all my life."
But Fr Cox, a curate at St Mel's Cathedral in Longford, told RTE radio's Marian Finucane he was puzzled by her claims.
He said: "I was amazed to read this woman talk about Catholic guilt.
"I don't know Dervla's upbringing, her story, her personal life.
"But I think in general, you won't meet many contemporaries who would talk about Catholic guilt being a burden."
"Guilt may have existed before religions ever began. It's a normal human condition."
