Preview; THE BRODSKY QUARTETSt George's Hall Concert Room.

Byline: Catherine Jones

SUNDAY afternoon sees the world premiere of a new piece by Wirral-based composer Ian Stephens.

Jonathan Small , the RLPO's principal oboist, will perform the new Oboe Quintet, playing alongside the Brodsky Quartet at the concert in the splendid surroundings of the St George's Hall Concert Room.

The work has been commissioned by the Rodewald Concert Society.

"My Oboe Quintet is dedicated to the memory of two Liverpool oboists, Monica Nurnberg and David Dutch," Ian explains.

"I haven't shied away from soaring melody or rich harmony, and those who know my music will have come to expect some fast and furious dance music.

"I was at a rehearsal for this piece in London and 'fast and furious' barely does justice to the no-holds-barred gusto with which Jonathan and the Brodsky Quartet attacked the dance sections!" Ian adds: "As well as my new piece, the Brodsky Quartet performs the beautiful String Quartet No 2 (the one with the tune from Kismet) and Scherzo by Alexander Borodin and the unforgettable Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber in its original version for string quartet, and they are joined by Jonathan in the delightful Oboe Quartet by Mozart."

As well as being excellent oboe players, David Dutch was the founder of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and a major supporter of various amateur societies, while Dr Monica Nurnberg was a founder member of the Metropolitan Cathedral Orchestra. Both died in 2011.

The London-based Brodsky Quartet, meanwhile, is one of the world's leading string quartets.

It was founded in 1972, and since then it has performed more than 3,000 concerts on the major stages of the world and released more than 60 recordings.

Over the past four decades, it has also become as well-known for collaborations with pop stars like Elvis Costello and Bjork as for its dedication to Shostakovich and Beethoven.

and the quartet - Daniel Rowland, Ian Belton, Jacqueline Thomas and Paul Cassidy-h- has also been - has also been a regular visitor to Liverpool. ? The Brodsky Quartet plays .at St George's Hall Concert Room on Sunday, at 2.30pm. Tickets are PS24/PS18/PS12 on 0844 8000 410 or from https://
