Preview; BORGES AND I The Unity, Liverpool.

Byline: Catherine Jones

THEATRE company Idle Motion is heading for Liverpool with its five star-rated production, Borges and I. The Total Theatre Award-nominated show comes to the Unity theatre for one night only on March 14.

Borges and I is a piece of visual physical theatre that explores the life and work of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges.

The short-story writer, poet and translator was born in Buenos Aires in 1899 and died in Geneva at the age of 86.

One of the most influential authors of the 20th century, he went blind towards the end of his life as he became director of The National Library of Argentina.

He is widely known for his fascination and obsession with books, writing imaginative stories conjuring forth images of labyrinths, tigers, mirrors and a universe of libraries.

His most famous books, Ficciones and The Aleph are compilations of short stories interconnected by some of these common themes along with religion and philosophy.

Idle Motion aims to bring these evocative stories to the stage through the use of multimedia, inventive staging, 200 books and a haphazard book group in which a couple meet through a shared love of literature.

Borges himself said: "Any life is made up of a single moment, the moment in which a man finds out, once and for all, who he is. I have imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Idle Motion was formed in 2007 and is an associate company at New Diorama Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse, while it's also supported by the Greenwich Theatre and by actress Juliet Stevenson, who is the company's patron, and who says: "It's fantastic to see a company of young theatre practitioners emerging with such originality, passion and inventiveness."

The actors work closely as an ensemble to create devised shows through workshops and improvisation.

Its filmic style is highly visual, creating bold theatrical images on stage with strong narratives and creative use of props and movement.

Previous productions include The Seagull Effect and The Vanishing Horizon, both of which were performed at The Lowry but never made it to Liverpool. ? Borges and I is at the Unity theatre on March 14 at 8pm.

Tickets are PS10/PS8 on 0844 873 2888.
