Prevention of global tobacco epidemic, protection of public health to be discussed in Bishkek.

Inter-sectoral meeting on strengthening the joint measures to prevent global tobacco epidemic and protect the health of the population of Kyrgyzstan from the effects of tobacco will be held in Bishkek, the press service of the Ministry of Health reports.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the world each year on May 31. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls on all countries to draw attention to the problem of illicit trade in tobacco products, and invites the parties to join the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control to unite the efforts in fight against illicit trade in tobacco products.

Thus, illicit trade in tobacco products is a serious global problem in many ways, including health, legal and economic aspects of governance and corruption.

According to a research by the global customs community, share of the illicit market of tobacco products may account for almost every tenth cigarette in the world. The European Commission estimates losses of the illicit trade in cigarettes at more than E10 billion a year.

The inter-sectoral meeting is co-organized by the Ministry of Health and the National Institute for Strategic Studies.
