Preventing sinus pain.

Q

I am so tired of the pain associated with my sinus problems. What's the best way to prevent this sinus pain?

J.F., Philadelphia

A

Simply put, it depends on the cause of the nasal inflammation, which could be related to dust, pollen, mold, food, or a number of other allergens that can produce a respiratory reaction. Although you can't avoid all sinus disorders, doctors recommend avoiding cigarette smoke and other air pollutants. You might get some relief when you use a humidifier, air conditioners and electrostatic filters to remove allergens from the air.

Additionally, doctors say avoid swimming pools with high concentrations of chlorine, and when flying, use a nasal decongestant before takeoff and landing.
