President kicks off health initiative.

President Nicos Anastasiades on Tuesday will meet public health stakeholders as part of his initiative to resolve the problems the sector faces.

On Monday, he had asked for a list of doctor shortages according to specialty and figures regarding waiting lists and referrals to the private sector.

During a meeting with the ministers of finance and health, and health ministry officials, the president discussed the lack of personnel, working hours, waiting lists, as well as consultations with nurses over the process of making hospitals autonomous, a prerequisite for the NHS.

Tuesday's meeting at the presidential palace will be attended by ministers, health services officials, and representatives of doctors' and nurses' unions.

The president also asked the medical association to submit their views on the issues under discussion, while he also announced he is to meet with the political parties within the month.

State doctors union PASYKI said that the president's stance on the problems of the public health sector, "is an implicit acknowledgment of the positions" of the union, which has repeatedly said that public hospitals were understaffed.

Nurses union PASYNO said that no matter how many plans were drafted as regards hospital autonomy and the NHS, no reform would be effective if hospitals remain understaffed.
